Moving to the cloud - is it simple?

Asking whether or not it’s simple to move to the cloud, is akin to asking how long a piece of string is. It will depend on many factors - how much data you are moving; what format it’s in; who needs to access it; what applications you’re running; how they function and what they need to run - are just a few examples. But whatever your requirements, with the right cloud hosting partner and a comprehensive strategy in place, then yes - moving to the cloud can be simple and straightforward.

Broadly speaking, cloud migration can be broken down into a six stage process.

  • Assessment
  • Proof of concept
  • Data move
  • Applications move
  • Leveraging the cloud
  • Cloud optimisation

A good cloud provider will be able to walk you through this process, supporting you at every step of your cloud journey, where you require it. There should be minimal business impact in terms of downtime during the process, and training and support should be on offer.

One recommendation would be to start small. You don’t necessarily have to migrate your entire IT infrastructure to the cloud at all - let alone in one go. Consider starting your cloud migration with the apps that require the least amount of resources, or those that are not business critical. They will be the quickest to migrate and likely have the least amount of disruption through the migration process. As you progress with your cloud maturity, you can scale up and expand your cloud infrastructure to include more complex applications and databases to meet business demand.

You may have the expertise in-house to lift and shift your infrastructure to the cloud. But if you do need the support of a cloud provider, it’s crucial that you find the right partner that not only supports you every step of the way, but who you work well with. A cloud provider should be more than just a provider. A consultative approach should lead to a true partnership that enables your cloud partner to really understand your business, and with that, recommend truly beneficial solutions to meet your needs.
