Why are we building a new data centre?

Hopefully you’ve heard the news that we will be opening a brand new data centre later this year. Based in Manchester, our new building will cover 25,000 ft2 of space and accommodate over 500 new server racks in both high and standard density. It will be carrier neutral, protected by BS5979 accredited security and built to enterprise standards using best-in-class efficient technology. We’re really proud of what we’re creating and can’t wait to share the progress with you as the build develops.

But why are we doing it?

Data centre space in Manchester is becoming harder to secure. We’ve built three new data halls at our Delta House facility in the past couple of years, and already, these are full. Our research tells us that there is currently a lack of data centre space in Manchester, with capacity in the region nearing a critical point. For businesses looking to expand their hosting capacities and cloud networks, data centre space is becoming harder to secure.

In recent years, Manchester has really emerged as a data centre hotspot. The city is booming and positively established as being the tech hub of the North. This is fantastic to see, and we’re proud to be a part of it. However, this increased takeup hasn’t been matched by an increase in data centre providers in the area, which has created the shortfall we are now seeing. Supply and demand isn’t quite tallying up. There has been expansion in the area for sure, but in many ways the data centre industry in Manchester has been slow to catch up, hindered at times by continued consolidation, a decreasing number of independents, acquisition and the reluctance to invest in a risky environment - even at a time when data centre takeup is high, it’s a huge commitment. Especially for the few remaining independents in the city.

As a data centre provider we feel that we have a responsibility to our clients to ensure that continuous capacity is available and we hope to be able to expand fast enough to meet this demand so that we can support our clients’ growth through resilient, secure and dependable data centre services and hosting solutions.

We’ll keep you posted on the progress of our new facility, but at present we hope to be opening our first data hall in Q4 2022. If you’d like to put your name down for a tour of the facility when it opens, or would like to inquire about colocation space in our new data centre, you can get in touch with the team on 0161 498 1200 or via our website here
