What is “good” resilience?
At Teledata we employ 2N+N resilience which basically means that our power backup has a backup. We’ve got UPS systems in place that step in to prevent any sustained downtime of power - these are like big batteries and if the mains power goes out, the UPS picks up the slack until the mains power is restored, which is usually pretty quickly. If that isn’t the case though, and we experience a longer power outage, then we have diesel generators that will kick in to ensure power continually flows through our data halls. By providing this sort of resilience it means that in any situation, we’re able to keep the lights on for our clients. This kind of resilience means that businesses can rest assured that in the worst case scenario, they’re covered.
Can on-premises hosting have resilience?
Very rarely would any on premises solution have this sort of resilience built in. It’s just not something that businesses factor into their ongoing costs when hosting for themselves. It can of course be part of any solution, but we’re yet to see something that we’d consider good enough to rival what a good data centre would offer. Not only that, but there are other measures to consider such as fire suppression, security and connectivity. With an on-prem solution, if one connection fails that’s often it. The end, until it’s fixed. Resilience doesn’t just mean power, it means the ability to continue. Data centres will have the connectivity resilience and fire safety protocols in place to support this - whereas not many on-premise IT infrastructures would have the budgets to deploy this level of contingency. That’s why colocation is such a strong option for businesses because these things are usually already in place and ready to go, giving businesses peace of mind.
Cloud hosting is the most resilient of all
Businesses often look to having a “cloud backup” which is a very strong option, but often we’d recommend that cloud hosting should actually be the primary focus of where a business should be moving in order to get the best peace of mind from their hosting requirements. Obviously cloud hosting isn’t actually in the clouds in the sky, it exists somewhere – but knowing that should anything happen, then there are systems in place to load balance with multiple connections and the ability to scale the infrastructure up and down on demand – means that cloud hosting in a data centre with huge resilience capabilities is by far the best option a business has to ensure that their operation continues, no matter what happens.
